/Aviary Escape

-Story-
A flock of captive birds were set free by their owner, who no longer wanted them. Not knowing how to survive in the wild. The birds try their best to the learn the ways of the wilderness, how to find food, hide from predators, and all that stuff they never had to worry about before..

(The birds are all goldfinches.)

Personality: Partially because of her history, and partially because, she's just the way she is. Neph is quite the spoiled little finch. Always one of owner's favourites, she was raised without a care in the world.. With other finches, she likes to have things her way, or she can become quite grumpy. No one can blame her though, as she had a terribly tough childhood. Found abandoned out on the streets, she was taken in by owner and nursed back to health.
Other: She was owner's very first goldfinch.

For the past few weeks, Furrow had noticed some unusual behavior from their lifelong owner, the female human. Every year, she would pamper them, feed them only the best of food and let them fly around in her backyard. She would do so to prep them, then show them to these certain people in uniforms. Every year, these people would examine the birds closely, then attach a shiny blue ribbon that said "1st" onto the cage. But this year, the blue ribbon went to someone else...
After that, the owner stopped pampering them...she fed them the gross, dry, and tasteless seeds. They hadn't gone outside ever since.
Furrow was worried...

Salin, who seemed completely oblivious to the change, munched happily on the tasteless seeds.

"Maybe I'm overreacting." Furrow thought, seeing that Salin didn't seemed troubled at all.
He peered at his owner through the bars of the cage. She was sitting on the couch, reading the newspaper. Furrow was confused when he noticed that she would glance up at them every now and then.

Salin saw Furrow standing by the side of the cage. Curious, he flew over.

"Sup?" he chirped.

Furrow snapped out of his daze. "Oh...hey," he looked down at the seeds that Salin was munching on. "Are you actually enjoying the new food?"

"Hm? New food? Since when did the food change?" Salin replied, sounding quite confused.

He streched one wing and yawned. "One thing though, we haven't been out in the garden for quite some time now.. My wings are starting to ache from lack of use..is something up?" He gazed out the cage bars at their once dedicated owner.

"Nothing, nothing it's just that uh..." Furrow's voice went all hush. "Why is she no longer prepping us for those people with the blue ribbon?" He glanced over at her, as if he was afraid that she would understand what he was saying. "I mean, it's been a while since she cleaned us, or made us exercise."

"Maybe she just forgot? Here, I'll call her." Salin promptly began calling out as loud as he could.
The woman on the couch just stared.
"Damn, why isn't she looking" He clawed at the cage bars and chirped again.
Finally, the woman got up and began pushing the cage towards the backyard door.
"See! It worked!"

Panic-stricken, Furrow puffed his feathers up and began frantically beating his wings around blindly, despite the cage moving rather slowly. "I knew it! She's possessed! She's gone mad! She ate something that messed up her brain! That MUST be it!

Plume, who was sleeping in the manmade nest, awoke abruptly to vibrations of the cage moving, and not to mention the high pitched squawks of Furrow. "Oh what the heck?"

"Calm down, she must be moving us to the backyard!" Salin chirped exitedly.

Tash, who was quite frightened by the movement and noise, snuggled under her mother's feathers.

Furrow, calming down a little, perched beside Plume, chest heaving. "Plume, you know about spells, rituals, and spirits, right?"
"For the last time, Furrow, I said I knew a magic trick, it's not the same thing!"
"So you do, right...?"
Plume groaned and curled back up to sleep beside Tash.
"It's an emergency, Plume! Something is wrong with our owner!"
Suddenly, Furrow noticed the food spilling out of the bowls, the nest slipping across the fake branch, the entire world seemed to go tipsy turvy and dizzying. "Are we...tipping over?"

CRASH! The cage fell onto the hard cement, smashing open the wire doors.

"Oh, wow, she's usually not that rough with us.." Salin, quick to recover from the incident, immeadiatly picked himself up from the spilled seeds and water and flew out the cage door.

"finally, she's come to her senses and let us out for a little flying" he swerved around above the cage, feeling the wind under his wings. "Come on everyone!"

"Oh god, what the heck was that??" Plume groaned, picking herself up from the scattered food and the smushed nest.
Suddenly, hit by shock, her eyes widened in horror. With a beat of her wings, she lifted herself into the air and yelled out at the top of her lungs. "Tash! Tash! Oh god where are you??? Are you alright?? Please say something!!"

A small cheep came from the ruins of the cage...

Plume arrived at a screeching halt, turned around, and made a beeline dive at where the sound had come from. "Tash!!"
She stalled, pulled up, and examined the disaster area for her daughter. She noticed that the fallen water bowl was moving because of something underneath it. With a horrified gasp, Plume dug her claws into the bowl, and with all her might, threw it to a side.

Tash lay on her side with one stretched out, her eyes were closed..

Salin realized the trouble, and quickly came down to Plume's side.

"Oh tash..." Plume whimpered.
She snuggled in beside her, pressing her warm chest close to her's. She felt her heart beat.

Tash opened one eye, "W-What happened..?"

She tried to get up, but was stopped by the sharp pain in her wing. "Ow..I think I broke my wing.."

the other goldfinches crowded around her..

Plume gasped in shock, then proceeded to be flooded by happiness. "Oh Tash, I knew you were strong but...wow! Shhh...don't move, you're hurt". Plume then started grooming Tash's ruffled feathers.

Meanwhile, a dazed Furrow lay shocked amidst it all. His feathered chest heaved up and down vigorously. His tiny claws twitched. He looked like a clump of dirty feathers mangled with food, 2-day-old water, and cage bars. He blinked. "What...happened?"
